Stopover guide
Liverpool is one of the UK’s most popular city destinations and it comes with a surprising amount of history and shopping, eating and nightlife options. Liverpool is the home of The Beatles and many tourists come here to pay homage to their idols, while many will say that Liverpool United (Anfield) is an even bigger draw. Brilliant museums and galleries also feature at the tourist haven that is the Albert Dock.
Attractions:
- Albert Dock is a rejuvenated part of Liverpool and one of its star attractions, featuring The Beatles Story exhibition and the Tate Gallery.
- The award-winning Merseyside Maritime Museum is at the northern end of Albert Dock and retells the history of Liverpool as a major port.
- The Cavern Club is one of the world’s most famous live music venues and was the original haunt of the ‘Famous Four’.
- The Museum of Liverpool Life delves into the culture of Liverpool’s people through the eons, from the love of football and Liverpool United to inner-city riots.
- Liverpool Cathedral has a commanding position over the city and boasts magnificent stained glass windows.
Eating and shopping: Liverpool is loaded with shopping options and pedestrianised streets in the city centre harbour numerous popular UK high street department stores, unique and well established boutiques and specialty shops. You will find the bulk of the bustling shopping areas situated on Church, Bold, Lord, Paradise and Whitechapel streets, while Albert Dock offers many specialist outlets.
For dining, Liverpool offers the usual collection of fast-food chains, while Slater street has a number of more traditional cafés and restaurants, and Berry street in Chinatown has a good selection of Chinese noodle stalls. The nightlife in Liverpool is legendary, with bars, pubs and clubs throughout the city; the Philharmonic and the Ye Cracke are two of the city’s best known watering holes, the latter of which was a favourite with John Lennon.

Day trips and tours: home of the Grand National, Aintree Racecourse is one of the world’s most recognisable racecourses and is situated only a short drive from Liverpool city centre; a nine-hole golf course is also located on-site. A fantastic example of Tudor architecture can be seen at the 15th century Speke Hall, while the massive Metropolitan Cathedral is on a par with the world famous St Peter's in London.
For those who wish to explore the outer reaches of the city, Port Sunlight is a purpose-built Victorian village with a large collection of arts and crafts shops, and it is located to the southeast of Liverpool, while the Peak District National Park is just beyond bustling Manchester to the east.
