Aberdeen is affectionately known as the ‘The Flower of Scotland’, owing to the abundance of gardens here and it also happens to be the base for explorations of gas and oil in the North Sea. Aberdeen boasts significant historical sites and has six indoor shopping malls and several pedestrianised shopping streets.
Attractions:
- The Winter Gardens are one of Aberdeen’s star attractions and Europe’s largest garden under glass.
- The Satrosphere is an interactive science and discovery centre with family attractions.
- Aberdeen Fun Beach stretches along the promenade and is loaded with fun attractions as well as cafés, restaurants and bars.
- King's College Chapel at Aberdeen University has a fantastic art collection dating from the 15 th century, while the building itself is spectacular.
- Marischal College is another of Aberdeen University’s buildings that happens to be the second largest granite building in the world.
- Aberdeen is known for its brilliant museums and galleries including the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
- The city is home to His Majesty’s Theatre, one of Scotland’s finest Edwardian theatres.
Eating and shopping: shopping and dining options in Aberdeen are enticing and varied. There are six indoor shopping malls in the town centre including the Trinity Centre and the Bon Accord Centre, where everything from designer fashion to books are available, while many unique shops can be found along Union street. Meanwhile, numerous pubs and restaurants offer everything from traditional Scottish fare to international cuisine.
Nightlife in Aberdeen is also varied, from year-round cultural performances at His Majesty’s Theatre to thumping rock and pop concerts at the Lemon Tree and live folk music at many of the city’s pubs. In addition, the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre regularly stages performances by major bands.
Day trips & tours: for those who fancy exploring Aberdeen’s surroundings, the charming village of Fittie (or Footdee as it is locally known) lets you step back in time, while the nearby Grampian Mountains offer a fine day out for the entire family, with their intriguing castles and spectacular views. Perched on a cliff top, Dunnottar Castle is a must-see.
You can also take to the popular Whisky Trail (near Aberdeen) and discover the history behind some of the world’s most quaffable brand name whiskies including Glenfiddich and Glenlivet.
